Must-Visit Attractions on the Gold Coast
- by Filip
The Gold Coast is one of Australia’s most vibrant and exciting destinations, offering a perfect mix of natural beauty, thrilling adventures, and a laid-back coastal vibe. On my recent trip, I set out to explore the best that the Gold Coast has to offer, and I was not disappointed. From stunning beaches to lush rainforests and world-renowned theme parks, this region is truly a traveler’s paradise. Here, I’ll share my experiences and insights on the must-visit attractions on the Gold Coast that you shouldn’t miss.
Surfers Paradise Beach
My first stop was the iconic Surfers Paradise Beach, a three-kilometer stretch of golden sand that is perhaps the most famous beach in Australia. As I walked along the shoreline, I was immediately struck by the stunning contrast between the bustling city skyline and the serene, expansive ocean. The beach was alive with activity – surfers catching waves, families building sandcastles, and sunbathers soaking up the Queensland sunshine.
I spent a good portion of my day here, alternating between swimming in the warm waters and relaxing on the soft sand. If you’re into surfing, this beach is a haven, offering some of the best waves in the country. For those who are less experienced, there are plenty of surf schools where you can take a lesson or two. As the sun began to set, I joined the crowd on the Esplanade to watch the sky turn brilliant shades of orange and pink – a truly magical experience.
SkyPoint Observation Deck
After my relaxing morning at the beach, I decided to get a bird’s-eye view of the Gold Coast by heading to the SkyPoint Observation Deck. Located atop the Q1 Building, one of the tallest residential towers in the world, the observation deck offers 360-degree panoramic views of the coastline, the city, and the hinterland beyond.
Taking the elevator up to the 77th floor was an experience in itself, as it zipped upward in just a matter of seconds. Once at the top, I was greeted with breathtaking views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The sight of the sparkling Pacific Ocean, the winding canals, and the lush green hinterland all from one vantage point was nothing short of spectacular. For the adventurous, there’s even the SkyPoint Climb, where you can scale the outside of the building for an even more exhilarating experience.
Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
No trip to the Gold Coast would be complete without a visit to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. As an animal lover, I was particularly excited about this part of my trip. The sanctuary, which is one of the oldest on the Gold Coast, offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with Australia’s native wildlife.
I spent hours wandering through the lush grounds, encountering kangaroos, koalas, and a wide variety of birds. One of the highlights for me was the opportunity to hand-feed the kangaroos. These gentle creatures were surprisingly friendly and more than happy to accept a snack or two. The koala experience was another unforgettable moment – holding one of these adorable animals was a dream come true.
The sanctuary also features daily shows, including the Free Flight Bird Show, where I watched in awe as majestic birds of prey soared above the audience. For families traveling with children, the sanctuary offers a perfect mix of education and entertainment, making it a must-visit attraction.
Lamington National Park
Looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city, I took a day trip to Lamington National Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests. Just a short drive from the Gold Coast, this park is a haven for nature lovers, offering more than 160 kilometers of walking trails through lush rainforests, past waterfalls, and along scenic ridges.
I chose to hike the Tree Top Walkway, a series of suspension bridges that take you high into the rainforest canopy. Walking among the treetops, with the sounds of birds and the rustling of leaves all around, was an experience I’ll never forget. The views from the lookout points along the trail were absolutely stunning, offering glimpses of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
For those who enjoy birdwatching, Lamington National Park is home to a variety of bird species, including the vibrant Regent Bowerbird and the elusive Albert’s Lyrebird. The park also offers the opportunity to spot other wildlife, such as pademelons and possums, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon.
Sea World
One of the most exciting days of my trip was spent at Sea World, a marine-themed park that’s perfect for families and thrill-seekers alike. Located right on the water, Sea World combines the excitement of amusement park rides with educational exhibits and live animal shows.
I started my day by exploring the various marine life exhibits, where I got to see everything from sharks and rays to playful dolphins and sea lions. The highlight of my visit was the dolphin show, where I watched these incredibly intelligent animals perform a series of breathtaking acrobatics. The bond between the trainers and the dolphins was evident, and it was fascinating to learn more about these amazing creatures.
For those seeking an adrenaline rush, Sea World offers a variety of thrilling rides. I couldn’t resist the Leviathan, a wooden roller coaster that takes you on a wild ride through twists, turns, and drops. The Jet Rescue coaster was another favorite, simulating a high-speed chase across the water.
Burleigh Heads National Park
Another highlight of my trip was a visit to Burleigh Heads National Park, a small but stunning park located on the southern end of the Gold Coast. The park is known for its diverse landscapes, including coastal rainforest, rocky headlands, and beautiful beaches.
I opted to hike the Oceanview Walk, a relatively easy trail that follows the coastline and offers breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Along the way, I stopped at various lookout points to take in the scenery and watch surfers ride the waves below. The trail also passes through a rainforest section, where I encountered native plants and wildlife, including brush turkeys and water dragons.
At the end of the trail, I arrived at Tallebudgera Creek, a popular spot for swimming and picnicking. The crystal-clear water was incredibly inviting, and I spent some time relaxing on the sandy shore before heading back.
Hot Air Balloon Ride
To cap off my Gold Coast adventure, I decided to splurge on a hot air balloon ride – and it was worth every penny. Rising before dawn, I was picked up from my hotel and taken to the launch site. As the balloon was inflated, I felt a mix of excitement and anticipation.
Once we were airborne, the views were nothing short of spectacular. Watching the sunrise over the Gold Coast from the sky was a surreal experience. Below me, I could see the city’s skyscrapers, the winding canals, and the expansive coastline stretching out into the distance. The calm and peacefulness of floating above the landscape made it an unforgettable experience.
After the ride, we landed in a field and celebrated with a traditional champagne breakfast. It was the perfect way to end my trip to the Gold Coast – a moment of pure tranquility and beauty that I’ll carry with me forever.
The Gold Coast is a destination that truly has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for relaxation, adventure, or a bit of both, this vibrant region won’t disappoint. From the sun-soaked beaches of Surfers Paradise to the lush rainforests of Lamington National Park, the Gold Coast offers a diverse range of experiences that make it a must-visit destination.
