Savor the Flavors of Adelaide: Top Affordable Eateries in the City
- by Filip
As a frequent traveler with an insatiable love for food, Adelaide quickly became one of my favorite culinary destinations. It may not have the culinary reputation of Sydney or Melbourne, but trust me when I say that Adelaide is a hidden gem for food lovers. What I appreciated most about the city is that you don’t have to break the bank to enjoy exceptional meals. From cozy cafes to vibrant market stalls, the city offers a wide range of affordable yet mouthwatering dining experiences.
This guide is a compilation of my culinary journey through Adelaide, with detailed insights into some of the best budget-friendly spots I discovered. Each of these eateries holds a special place in my heart, and I’m excited to share my personal experiences with you.
1. Adelaide Central Market – A Food Lover’s Paradise
The first place any foodie must visit in Adelaide is the iconic Adelaide Central Market. It’s not just a market; it’s a cultural institution. With over 80 stalls offering everything from fresh produce to gourmet delicacies, you can easily spend an entire day exploring the market’s offerings.
Location and How to Get There:
Located at 44-60 Gouger Street in the heart of the city, the market is easily accessible by foot, bus, or tram. I was staying in the city center, so it was just a quick 10-minute walk for me. If you’re staying a bit further out, there are plenty of public transport options that will drop you right at the entrance.
My Experience:
Walking into Adelaide Central Market felt like stepping into a foodie wonderland. The vibrant colors, the rich smells of freshly baked bread, and the chatter of vendors created a lively atmosphere that immediately drew me in. I started my food journey with a coffee at Lucia’s Fine Foods, one of the market’s oldest stalls. Their espresso was rich and strong – just the pick-me-up I needed to start my day.
From there, I couldn’t resist the cheese and cured meats at The Smelly Cheese Shop. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, offering samples and pairing suggestions. I ended up buying a small wheel of soft brie and some salami to enjoy later in the day. The prices were surprisingly reasonable, and I found it to be one of the best places to grab high-quality snacks on a budget.
For lunch, I stopped by Big Table, a popular cafe located inside the market. Their menu is simple but delicious. I ordered a grilled vegetable sandwich, and it was packed with fresh, flavorful ingredients. What I loved most about Big Table was its communal seating – I ended up chatting with a local couple who gave me some great tips on other affordable eateries in the area.
Price Range:
Meals at Adelaide Central Market vary depending on what you choose, but you can easily find satisfying options for under AUD 15. A coffee and a pastry will set you back around AUD 8, while a hearty sandwich from one of the cafes will cost about AUD 12-15.
Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★
The Central Market is a must for anyone visiting Adelaide, whether you’re a budget traveler or a foodie looking for a unique experience. I give it a solid 5/5 for its diversity, affordability, and the overall vibrant experience.
2. Chinatown Cafe – Authentic Asian Flavors Without the Price Tag
Located just around the corner from Adelaide Central Market, Chinatown is another fantastic spot to indulge in affordable and authentic Asian cuisine. After hearing so much about the food scene in Adelaide’s Chinatown, I knew I had to stop by Chinatown Cafe for a meal.
Location and How to Get There:
Chinatown Cafe is located at 17 Moonta Street, right in the heart of Adelaide’s Chinatown. It’s a short walk from the city center, and if you’re already visiting the Central Market, it’s just a stone’s throw away.
My Experience:
As soon as I walked into Chinatown Cafe, I was hit by the intoxicating aroma of stir-fried dishes and rich broths. The cafe is unpretentious, with simple decor and a casual atmosphere, but what it lacks in ambiance, it more than makes up for in flavor.
I ordered a bowl of their famous laksa, and it did not disappoint. The portion was generous, and the broth was rich and spicy, with just the right balance of coconut milk and chili. It came loaded with noodles, tofu, prawns, and vegetables. For just AUD 12, it was one of the best meals I had in Adelaide.
The service was quick and efficient, and despite the constant flow of customers, I never felt rushed. I was able to enjoy my meal in peace while soaking in the bustling atmosphere of Chinatown.
Price Range:
Most dishes at Chinatown Cafe are priced between AUD 10-15, making it an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers. Whether you’re craving laksa, fried rice, or dumplings, you’re guaranteed to get a satisfying meal for a great price.
Recommendation Rating: ★★★★☆
Chinatown Cafe offers incredible value for money, with authentic and flavorful dishes. While the decor might be simple, the food more than makes up for it. I give it a 4/5 for its affordability and the quality of the dishes.
3. Afghan Charcoal Kebab House – A Hidden Gem for Meat Lovers
One of the best things about Adelaide is its multicultural food scene, and Afghan Charcoal Kebab House is a perfect example of this. Tucked away on Hindley Street, this small, family-run eatery serves up some of the most delicious kebabs I’ve ever tasted.
Location and How to Get There:
Located at 40 Hindley Street, the restaurant is easy to find if you’re exploring the western side of the city center. I found it while wandering around one evening and was drawn in by the mouth-watering smell of grilled meat.
My Experience:
The first thing that struck me about Afghan Charcoal Kebab House was the smell of the charcoal grill. The restaurant itself is small, with just a handful of tables, but the food packs a punch. I ordered the lamb kebab plate, which came with freshly grilled lamb skewers, rice, salad, and naan bread. The lamb was perfectly seasoned and tender, with a smoky flavor from the charcoal grill.
What I loved most was the generous portion sizes – I couldn’t even finish my plate, and I’m someone who loves to eat! For just AUD 14, it was a steal. The naan bread was warm and soft, perfect for mopping up the flavorful juices from the kebab. I paired my meal with a glass of yogurt drink, which was refreshing and helped cool down the spices.
The staff was incredibly friendly, and despite the casual setting, the service felt personal. They even offered me some complimentary sauces to try with my meal, which added an extra layer of flavor.
Price Range:
Kebab plates are priced between AUD 12-15, with options like lamb, chicken, and beef. If you’re on a tighter budget, they also offer kebabs wrapped in naan for around AUD 9.
Recommendation Rating: ★★★★★

Location and How to Get There:
Sunny’s Pizza is located at 17 Solomon Street, a bit off the main drag but still easily accessible from the city center. I took a quick 15-minute walk from my hotel, and it was well worth the trip.
My Experience:
Sunny’s has a laid-back, retro vibe that immediately drew me in. The decor is fun and eclectic, with neon lights and mismatched furniture creating a unique atmosphere. The menu is simple, focusing on a small selection of pizzas and sides.
I ordered the Margherita pizza, which was topped with fresh basil, mozzarella, and a rich tomato sauce. The crust was thin and crispy, with just the right amount of char from the wood-fired oven. At AUD 15, it was a bit more expensive than some of the other meals I had in Adelaide, but the quality of the ingredients and the hip atmosphere made it worth it.
The best part? Sunny’s has a great selection of local beers and wines, so I treated myself to a glass of South Australian Shiraz to accompany my pizza.
Price Range:
Pizzas range from AUD 14-20, with a variety of vegetarian and meat options. Drinks are reasonably priced, with beers and wines starting at AUD 7.
Recommendation Rating: ★★★★☆
Sunny’s Pizza is the perfect spot for a casual night out with friends or a solo meal if you’re in the mood for pizza. The prices are a bit higher than some of the other eateries on this list, but the atmosphere and quality make it a worthwhile experience. I give it a 4/5 for its fun vibe and delicious pizzas.
